Piggy Kornered

Kitty Kornered is one of my all time favorite Porky cartoons. The gags whirl on at an incessant pace, the backgrounds are gorgeous (if not garish at times), and the acting is superb.

My favorite scene is by Rod Scribner: Porky is booted from his own humble abode by four pesky cats who refuse to be put outside. Thus, Porky launches into a tirade, ranting and raving about how he's gonna tear those cats "eh-leh-leh-limb from uh-luh-leh-leh-leeah-limb!"

I've broken down the scene below: it's not entirely frame by frame, but it's close enough. Get a load of how gorgeous these are!

Just look at that face!

I really love the hands here. You can also physically feel his muscles straining in his face!

This below reminds me of something he'd animate during his days in Cal Dalton's unit. Son of a beh-beh-bih-eh-bih-eh--gun!

Such a great blend of cute and sadistic! Look at those giant pupils!

My only complaint is that it fades out too fast. I know you have to cut him off eventually, but these faces are too good to miss!

John Carey Character Animation

John Carey animates a nice little scene in Get Rich Quick Porky, Bob Clampett's second directorial entry.

Here, Honest John, a snake oil (emphasis on the oil) salesman attempts to swindle Porky and Gabby into signing a deed to dig for oil. Carey's scene is very smooth and rich in acting:

Gabby urges Porky to sign the deed by nudging him on. "Go on, Porky, let's buy it! We won't get another chance like this!"

Ever cautious, Porky mulls it over.

Gabby physically pushes Porky to make a decision. While Porky is cautious, he is equally naive, gullible, and easy to persuade. It doesn't take long for him to put a halt to his pondering. Gabby's persistence prevails, as does Honest John, who impatiently quips "Uh... 'til death do us part. Right here on the dotted line..."

Porky signs, much to the shared delight of Gabby and Honest John. Gabby's enthusiasm prompts him to lean over Porky's shoulder, eagerly watching his friend sign.

All's well that ends well. Gabby stuffs his hands in his "pockets", satisfied with their new deal. Carey's animation is incredibly smooth, and does a great job of displaying the personalities of the characters. Even Honest John's hand movements have life and charisma to them.
