Ward and Chuck Valentines

Love is in the air, and even cartoonists are seldom safe from The Stupid Cupid’s arrow of love.
From Frank Tashlin’s “The Stupid Cupid” (1944).

The valentine output may not be as hefty as a Christmas card output for cartoonists, there are still a handful of gems.

Here are some valentines from legendary Disney animator Ward Kimball:
Peeper is, of course, a nickname—late 1930s.
Betty Kimball pregnant with (presumably) their third child, Chloe, mid 1940s.

Mid 1940s.
1970s.
I love Ward’s Disney work, but I especially love his illustrations, particularly those from the mid to late 1930s. He has such a sentimental, fun, and recognizable size.

Chuck Jones was not immune to cupid’s arrow, either. In his later years, he would create watercolor paintings or cel paintings of his beloved characters:

Daffy HAS called Porky a cherub on a few occasions, it’s only fitting. 1985.

Even ferocious rivalries are put on hold to meet the valentine’s deadline. 1994.
As I mentioned before, you’ll find more Christmas cards from Disney staff, Warner Bros staff, etc. than you will valentines, but still interesting to note. You’d think Valentine’s Day would be the perfect opportunity for cartoonists to draw parody-levels of coy valentines! But I digress.

Happy (early) Valentine’s Day!
