Coal Black Reworked

I was talking with a friend and complaining about how Bob Clampett’s Coal Black and the Seven Dwarves has potential to be something great, but is so buried in racism and ugliness that any potential was wasted.

So Zaria (the friend!) made a few beautiful redesigns of the cast and gave these wonderful ideas. I didn’t come up with them, I’m just merely echoing them because they’re so fantastic!

Coal Black/So White would be rechristened as Lena Rand (an amalgamation of 40’s stars such as Lena Horne and Vivian Dandridge), and the military aspect of the short would be replaced in favor of  a heavy jazz focus. Lena Rand and the Seven Jazz Singers? With Prince Charming as the conductor.

There’s more, but I don’t want to give too much away! I just wanted to post my drawing here and boast about how great Zaria’s concept is/designs are!
